I'm a lady [May. 16th, 2008|10:54 am]

Major Project is over!!!!! Handed in on Tuesday, 3 minutes of animation, 10,000 words (really not sure how I managed to write that much) and in on time. So exhausted that day, but we managed several drinks (on virtually empty stomach). I'll post up some major project fun stuff, not so fun, shiny things blah at some point.

And then Wednesday was my birthday. I am now 21 years of age. Received a very nice watch from my parents ^^ and some fake mustaches from my sister (as well as the Death Note art book which is at home waiting). And hopefully a new graphics tablet (intuos 3 A5 wide) from my bf, when that arrives.
My friend baked me a cake :3 and we had champagne, then drinking and dancing in town. Managed to not spend anything all night. Yay for birthdays and nice people. Double southern comfort and lemonade all night.

And yesterday was lazy day. Slept off major project and dancing. then we cleaned out our living room. It looks so big now.

Wah I have to revise now

While watching a documentary about Disneyland this past weekend I came to the realization that if I were ever to do a mid-sized "edcuational" comic (say, 75 pages or so) for publication, it'd probably be about the guys who founded either Industrial Light and Magic or the poor bastards in Disney's Imagineering department. I'm just sayin'.

Also, cool people should probably check out The Character Design Blog and/or Lost: a theory on time travel. (The latter is the closest thing I've seen to a comprehensive "unified theory" about that bullshit show yet.)

Also, The World Ends With You? Fucking fantastic. I should be working on a new piece for EGM right now, but I find myself having a hard time pulling myself away from equipping my characters with hamburgers and chicken mcnuggets.

I'm going to Moscow for a couple of weeks! I hope to rediscover my roots, and maybe even learn to draw airplanes. I bought a special notebook to draw and write in while I'm there, but I'm usually terrible at that sort of thing so don't expect too much. See you later, blog!

Decidedly Fantastic Circumstance [May. 14th, 2008|03:53 pm]

I was dead chuffed to see this article in the Times Online earlier this week. Look! I drew that picture!

So it looks like the DFC publicity machine is getting rolling ready for the launch at the end of the month - and best of all, my lovely lady friend and I are invited to the official launch party tomorrow night. I am very excited to have an opportunity to dress up smart (should I wear my fez?), rub shoulders with some famous types (Philip Pullman! Jacqueline Wilson! Woo!), and most importantly of all: free booze and snacks! Score!

I am quite nervous about a lot of things too though; Will I be able to mingle with all these incredibly talented and creative types? Will my fez adequately convey that I am sophisticated, yet artistic? Will there actually be a free bar? And will I end up trying to drunkenly discuss sandwich fillings with Philip Pullman in the toilets? Many dangers await!

Oh, and if anyone knows any small people (or large people) who might like comics there is a special 25% off discount for early bird subscribers to the DFC - you can find out about it here. </hard sell>

Ooh, I think I need to sit down for a bit.

For absolutely no reason whatsoever, I felt like documenting this (click for even more needless notations):

Bill's lair

Also, anyone out there with access to a Wacom/Cintiq should probably spend a minimum of 5 minutes toying with this. Mix the Plant/Spout/Fire tools for extra fun!

Draw Yourself as a Teen Meme [May. 13th, 2008|07:02 am]
flightcomicsrss

Now that the dust seems to have settled on the draw yourself as a teen meme, it might be worth pointing out some of the Flight kids who got in on the action, comparing their teen selves with their present-day appearance:

Clio Chiang
Vera Brosgol
Dik Pose
Raina Telgemeier
Joel Carroll
Dylan Meconis
Tony Cliff
Jake Parker
John Martz (who has a story in the forthcoming Flight 5, and is pictured above)

If you want to see more (over 350 more!), do check out the full list of participants here.

Man, so. [May. 12th, 2008|10:53 pm]

Hello! I am going a little stir-crazy doing some designs of vapid girl characters. Since work is ending in two weeks and I don't have any formal employment lined up afterwards, I thought taking on a little bit of extra work would be a good idea, but it's driving me insane. Design doesn't click with me; I don't know how anyone can stand doing it for so long. If my storyboard is ripped apart for bad posing, timing, poor shot choices, dead scenes, etc. etc., I am very happy to change it and learn from it. However, things like changing a ruffle or increasing a foot size by 5% DO NOT make sense to me. GRRRN CLIO SMASH.

In other news that isn't driving me insane, my show pitch is going to be developed! Apparently the head of Teletoon (our all-cartoon station) liked it enough that some writers are being auditioned by the studio to help me form this mangled mess of an idea into something! viable! for! TV! Wah! Now I have to bulk up my original pitch, and upon further thinking already know that there are several things that need to be scrapped and changed completely. The whole process is turning out to be really fun, though, and I am determined to do the bulk of the work so that I have an answer to everything and no one will argue with me so much. Here are some silly spots I did for the initial pitch and a character study )

Frenzied Fauna and Freaky Flora [May. 12th, 2008|05:45 pm]

cover_440wtd.jpg

Hey folks, Michel Gagne here. I just wanted to let everyone know about my new book.

For years, I’ve been thinking of reprinting the long sold out, Frenzied Fauna: From A to Z. My vision for a new edition was always to package it with its companion, Freaky Flora: From A to Z, in one single volume.

The wait is finally over. Lo and behold: Frenzied Fauna and Freaky Flora!

Read my original post about the book on Gagne International’s official website!

A little meme from Ayelet (snatched from Keovi):

Leave a comment and I will:
a) tell you why I friended you,
b) associate you with something - fandom, a song, a colour, a photo, etc.,
c) tell you something I like about you,
d) tell you a memory I have of you,
e) ask something I've always wanted to know about you,
f) tell you my favorite user pic of yours,
g) in return, you must post this in your LJ.

I might not be able to answer these all at once (Erikas here! Im busy spending time with her! So I'll answer these while she D.A.R's)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY COLLEEN! [May. 12th, 2008|03:29 am]

yfrontninja

In addition to being 23, she is also an incredible friend with limitless talent and kindness. In the 7 years I’ve known her, I've often found myself smiling little thank-yous out into the universe for the lucky happenstance of our meeting. Seven years ago, when I sat behind her in social IB in a school completely alien to me, it’s doubtful that I knew the extent to which I would eventually get to know her. Experiencing moving to a new city, living next door to each other in post secondary, summer road trips, grad films, shows, she saved my life a few times in there, oh and last summer I saw her get married; my 14 year old self never saw it coming. When she and Dorian moved away to Halifax last year, it was kind of hard to imagine this city without someone like Colleen/[info]galsan in it (and to be honest the suck-factor of Vancouver went up about a million fold since her departure), but wonderful things have happened in this last year for her and we (Tim and I) couldn’t be prouder to be her friends.

I have to say, I would rather give her a hug and a cake for her birthday, but the internet and this crappy card will have to do. The card itself? Well, it’s in a package that has to travel across the country with a SECRET treat inside mwar har harrrrrrrr. It’s allegorical.

Harpr burfdae, Colleen! I hope all of your wildest dreams come true.

Almost at the end [May. 12th, 2008|09:29 am]

[music |Epik High]

So... just about finished the animation for major project. It could have been a lot more, but it's ok. So shiny. I'm happy for it to be rendered out (oh so much trouble with filling homequota, animated textures not appearing, lights needing to be added) and not having to re-render a lot of data.
Also we got sound effects from our SFX guy :3 so happy. I think I would have cried if we'd had to do it ourselves.
No bg music, since our composer's mac broke and now he has a dissertation. So can't complain. And he said he'd try to get something in the next few weeks, which is nice. Probably can submit that to uni for display (NCCA showcase) purposes.

Now just the report to write. Got about 3500 words so far, but still a lot to write and add pictures.
But hand in tomorrow and then relax... before exam revision stress

---

And since I've been working solidly for a while, I did a couple of digi-sketches. I'm not very efficient working digitally, so slow. But if I sketch on the PC then I'm not really leaving the computer and thus still working right?
Plus I want to brush up on the colouring skills.
But there is a picture on your left from my sketchploration.
Thank you Falcoon for the inspiration. One of my favourite artists.

Still have several traditional images to finish.
I think more picture posts are called for.

---

I have been mildly obsessed with Epik High... or more specifically Epik High feat Jisun - One. Awesome song.
Needed to learn how Korean is pronounced, sine I can't sing along to the lyrics... although I can't hippity-hop anyway XD

---

Also booked for Miyavi. It's pending payment, but came up with an error when I booked. Nice man on phone said it should go through, but just to keep an eye on it. Bleurgh. But awesome for seeing MYV

---

And everyone keeps going to the beach. I can't even go out in the sun because of work and it's so glorious

Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond [May. 10th, 2008|04:32 pm]
flightcomicsrss

Today is the opening of the Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond exhibit at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio. The exhibition kicks off with Jeff Smith and Scott McCloud in conversation, and the exhibit itself not only features original art by Jeff Smith, but also original art by influential artists such as Walt Kelly, Will Eisner, George Herriman, Charles Schulz, Carl Barks and more!

The exhibit will run from Sat., May 10 through to Sun., August 3. Get the full details on the exhibition, check out some of the set-up photos from Jeff’s blog, but if nothing else, the above video is worth watching just for some of the glimpses of the earliest Bone strips.
